Lies in the heart of the city, Malioboro street become one of the hottest attractions for foreigners. The street is alive at day and night with different vibes each time. Stretching for one-kilometer-long, the street is surrounded by buildings with traditional and Dutch colonial era mixed architecture. Shoppers can find traditional trinkets and clothing here.
Alun-alun is a Javanese architectural term for the large central open lawn squares common to villages, towns and cities in Indonesia. At night, the alun-alun are full of people looking for affordable amusement from the locals. The lights from odong-odong, a car bike, add to the fun and festivity there.
One of the most famous tourism destinations in Indonesia and listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO is Borobudur Temple and located 90 minutes-drive from Yogyakarta. The long drive is worth the wait to see the majestic and mysterious 1,195 years old Buddhist temple which is the largest in the world.
Consisting of more than two hundred temples, Prambanan Temple compound is located right on the Northeastern border of Yogyakarta. Prambanan Temple is a Hindu temple and believed to be more than 1,000 years old. The temple is famous for its legend about the dispute between Roro Jonggrang and Bandung Bandawasa.
On top of the hill 20 minutes from Prambanan Temple, there is the Ratu Boko compound. Often mistaken as a temple, however, it is in fact the remains of a palace owned by Roro Jonggrang. By day, you can spend time on the open green field while looking at the view of Yogyakarta from the top of the hill, while in the evening, the view of sunset is really astounding.
Located near to Parangtritis beach, Gumuk Pasir is a large sand dune which highly resembles hills that were created by the wind blowing from the sea. The site is starting to gain its fame because of the uncommon sport you can do here. Sandboarding has become the main highlight of visiting Gumuk Pasir for local and international visitors.
