Sanata Dharma University Contributes to the German-Indonesian DEEP Project to Strengthen Teacher Education

The Faculty of Teachers Training and Education (FKIP) at Sanata Dharma University (USD) is helping to strengthen international cooperation in teacher education through its involvement in the DEEP (Democracy, Environmental Education, and Discursive Participation) project, organized in collaboration with the University of Münster, Germany, and educational partners in Indonesia.

FKIP USD’s contribution is marked by the participation of F.X. Ouda Teda Ena, Ed.D., Dean of FKIP USD, in the DEEP intensive phase held in Münster from June 4 to 18, 2026. This marks the faculty’s first participation in the DEEP program and is part of an effort to expand FKIP USD’s international network regarding the development of teacher education.

DEEP focuses on three interconnected issues in pre-service teacher education: democracy education, sustainable development, and discursive participation. Through a cross-national and cross-professional approach, participants discuss how education can prepare future teachers to face challenges such as climate change, social polarization, digital communication, and various societal transformations.

During the intensive phase in Münster, USD’s involvement contributed to an exchange of Indonesian and German perspectives on education, school practices, and teacher professionalization. The dialogue brought together experiences from different educational contexts and fostered reflection on how educational practices can be adapted to specific contexts.

A key agenda item was a meeting on June 15, 2026, with Prof. Dr. Michael Quante, Vice-Rector for Internationalization, Transfer, and Sustainability at the University of Münster. Ouda Teda Ena attended the meeting alongside Prof. Dr. Juliane Stude, Kordula Schulze, and Dr. Widyastuti Purbani to discuss the progress of German-Indonesian cooperation and opportunities to strengthen the internationalization of teacher education. Discussions covered the potential development of joint learning formats, school-based exchanges, and institutional networking. FKIP USD’s involvement in DEEP opens up opportunities for broader collaboration in education, research, and knowledge transfer—particularly by fostering connections between higher education institutions, schools, and out-of-school learning environments. The project frames internationalization not merely as academic mobility, but as a collaborative process to strengthen the professional development of prospective teachers and to address social challenges in a context-sensitive manner.
